The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies organises lots of useful events and activities. I recently went to a very useful event called 'Stories With Impact' on how academics can tell effective stories about their activities. One of the presentations, by Gavin Fairbairn, was about how we should think of all writing, including academic writing, as story-telling. This is something I've always thought and tried to communicate to students. His talk had lots of interesting ideas and both the presentation and an mp3 are now available at the events archive page
